Somalia attack: MPs among dead in hotel blast and gun raid

Gunmen have stormed a hotel in the centre of the Somali capital Mogadishu, with reports of at least 10 dead and 50 wounded.

The attackers entered the Ambassador Hotel on Maka al-Mukarama street after setting off a car bomb at the gates outside, witnesses said.
Somalia's state news agency said two MPs were killed in the blast, with another four rescued.
The al-Shabab militant group was quick to say it was behind the attack.

The BBC's Somali Service reporter Ibrahim Aden in Mogadishu says the explosion is one of the largest to hit the city and the scale of destruction is huge.

The Nigeria Army on Tuesday gave reasons for the killing of some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), saying the security forces acted in self-defence when their intervention to restore law and order was resisted by the agitators.

Russian Performance Artist Pavlensky Nominated for FSB Prize

Controversial performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky has been nominated for the Russian Security Services' (FSB) Prize for Literature and the Arts for the artistic protest which saw him light the door of the FSB headquarters on fire.
Maria Baronova, a co-ordinator of the “Open Russia” human rights project, nominated the artist for the performance, which Pavlensky entitled “Threat.”
The Russian Security Services' Prize for Literature and the Arts awards artistic work on the subject of the FSB.
Pavlensky poured gasoline on the door of the FSB headquarters in Lubyanka in November 2015 and set it alight in protest against repressive government policies.
Baronova, who is to run in the upcoming Duma elections, said that the nomination had already been accepted.

China manufacturing and services PMI fall in May

Three separate surveys of Chinese economic activity released Wednesday revived doubts over the durability of the recovery in the world's second-largest economy.
The official May manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) came in at 50.1, Reuters reported. That was unchanged from April and a tick higher than the median 50 reading expected in a Reuters poll of 31 economists. But the report did mark the third straight month of the index hitting the key 50 level.

Trump University told students how to 'cash in' on housing crash

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's eponymous business seminar program created a class to teach students how to cash in on U.S. mortgage foreclosures during the housing crisis.
Trump University promised in 2009 that its "Fast Track to Foreclosure Investing" would teach students how to take advantage of the crisis, according to university documents unsealed last week in a lawsuit against the now-defunct program.
    The release will likely stoke criticism from the campaign of Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, who last week accused her likely rival in the Nov. 8 presidential election of having cheered on the 2008 housing crash as an investment opportunity.
A spokeswoman for Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment, although Trump reacted to Clinton's criticism last week, saying: "What am I going to do? I'm in business."

Tiger Temple: Forty dead Tiger cubs found at Thai temple

Forty tiger cub bodies have been found in a freezer at a Thai Buddhist temple accused of wildlife trafficking and animal abuse.

Police and wildlife officials started an operation on Monday to remove all the living tigers at the Tiger Temple.
Pictures from journalists at the scene posted to social media showed the 40 cub corpses lined up on the floor.
The site in Kanchanaburi is a popular tourist attraction but has been closed to the public since the raid.

Kenya announces Dadaab refugee camp will close by November

The world's largest refugee camp will close in November, Kenya's Interior Minister Joseph Nkaisserry has announced.

The Dadaab camp in Kenya is home to more than 300,000 Somalis.
Mr Nkaisserry said Kenya would work closely with the UN and the Somali government to repatriate the refugees.
Dadaab was set up in 1991 to house families fleeing conflict in Somalia, and some people have been living there for more than 20 years.
